In this post, we will reveal 5 amazing ways in which Google Plus can help improve your business from many different aspects. If you’ve been writing this platform off before, prepare to be WOWed at what it can really do.
[pssst… did you know you can highlight anything in this post to tweet it out? Try it out now!]
I have a question for you: Which social media platform is the most valuable for your business?
Ain’t that the question!
There are so many platforms out there, and many of us try to rock them all. Kudos to those who are succeeding at that, you’re a champ. Personally, I’d love to be one of those people that effortlessly navigates through every single social media channel and gets traffic and referral from them all. But alas, I don’t have unlimited amounts of time or patience for that. So I do what works for me instead.
I’ll bet you’re thinking the same – although you might feel like you’re not doing quite enough, especially if social media isn’t your strong suit. Having been using social media for business for the past 5 years, it’s pretty much become a part of me. But that doesn’t mean I’ll recommend for you to slave over every single platform imaginable. I don’t think that’s a good use of your time, frankly.
So what about Google Plus?
You might be wondering if it’s worth the time. You might be confused about whether it can really work for your business. You might also be worried that you just don’t have the time to take on yet another platform.
I get it. Learning a new platform can be overwhelming, especially when we lack the proper training or support do so. But before you write Google Plus off completely and toss it aside, I want to make sure you are aware of my reason for focusing on Google Plus the last couple of weeks.
In this post, we will uncover 3 amazing ways that Google Plus can help improve your business. Yes, really.
1. Google Plus can help your website score higher on search engines
I was recently reading a whitepaper by Search Metrics that listed out all of the triggers that help a website show up higher in search results in 2014. Wanna guess which social network topped the list?
Google Plus activity was actually the second most influential factor that affects a website’s search ranking, right after relevant terms!! This makes it the most important social network in terms of SEO! We can then draw the conclusion that using Google+ WILL help your rankings versus using another platform.
Is this reason enough to ditch Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms? Not necessarily. I always think it’s good to be on a few platforms (enough to handle) and I do think Google Plus is a good addition to the list of platforms to use on a consistent basis, at least for the SEO benefits.
How does this help benefit your business? Well, you’ll show up in search results higher, which ultimately means more traffic and more leads. Yay.
2. Google Plus can help you stand out in search results
A few weeks ago, Google totally scrapped Google Authorship. First, they took off the ability to see the headshots of authors who wrote the particular blog posts showing up in search results. There was quite a bit of backlash around it, especially since it’s been shown in numerous studies that those headshots actually increased click throughs.
It made sense – people trust other people. So when they saw someone’s smiling face next to a link showing up in search results, they were more likely to trust and click on that link than they would on any random boring link. But all that attention was bringing attention away from ads so Google had to scrap that. Or at least, that’s the speculation.
Thankfully, they left the Google+ author names next to each article though, still linking back to the Google Authorship. Even though you couldn’t see people’s faces anymore, you could at least see the author’s name and how many people follow them, to give them that credibility boost and still increase click throughs.
But what do you know – Google then scrapped that too. So now we’re left with boring ol’ links in our Google search results, just as we did a few years ago. Again, there’s a balance of attention going everywhere and headlines start to matter more than ever since there’s no other way to draw attention to the links anymore.
BUT! There’s still a way to draw attention to your results with a picture next to your post.
Curious? Wanna know how?
Google Plus, baby.
This is actually not a blog post linked directly, but rather a Google Plus update I posted that showed up in results. My face is still there. It’s obviously drawing a LOT more attention especially when compared to the boring ol’ image-less links on the rest of the page, right?
Yep. Your Google+ posts can actually show up in people’s search results when they’re logged in. How awesome is that? Yet another reason why Google Plus can really help improve your business… but avoiding the death of Google Authorship and leveraging how Google+ posts are previewed in search results.
3. Google Plus can help you connect with likeminded people
One of the coolest things about Google Plus is the ease of finding and connecting with like-minded individuals. Whether you’re looking for your audience of ideal clients or just people who are also doing what you’re doing and you want to be surrounded by that, your odds are in your favor in terms of finding those people.
Google+ Communities are places for people to discuss and hang out together around a specific topic. And the topics can get very specific! I’ve found and belonged to many different groups, some were more helpful than others – but overall this is one of my favorite features of using Google+ for my business.
Since I started using Communities, I’ve seen my own community and traffic grow on a consistent basis. Who doesn’t want that?

4. Google Plus can help you deepen your relationships with your tribe
Okay, I lied. My favorite thing about Google Plus aren’t communities, it’s Google Hangouts on Air. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about – whether you use them for personal video chatting or for webinars, it’s a gem.
If you haven’t used Google Hangouts on Air yet, I strongly recommend you try it out. It’s a free way to do webinars or Q&A’s for your tribe. You can do a lot of strategies and ideas around them as well – whether you want to do presentations and trainings where screen-sharing is necessary, or just show your beautiful face as you talk and explain something, or have a fireside chat online with several other co-hosts (like we do with our Entrepreneurial Book Club).
Google Hangouts are a great way to add value to your tribe and therefore deepen your relationships even more. They will begin to like you more, trust you, and therefore, will become more likely to buy from you as well. Win win win!
5. Google Plus can help your internal communication for free
Another way to use Google Hangouts is for internal purposes. Instead of using GoToWebinar or Skype, Google Hangouts allows for video chatting so you feel like your meetings are taking place in-person (face to face, what could be better) but you can also show your screen AND record your calls for future reference (if using Hangouts on Air).
Whether you have a big team you work with or just a few contractors, it’s important to stay in touch with them on a consistent basis, especially if they are virtual. There’s no faster way to communicate than in-person, and this is truly the next best thing.
Additionally, you can create a Google+ Community just for your team and business where everyone can share and collaborate together. Plus, gotta love the seamless integration with Google Drive right in the same platform. Making your life easier, one click at a time.
