Hipster Culture [from Fashion class blog]

[edited from 09/25/11] Today, I wanted to spend a little bit of time talking about the “hipster culture”. We hear about them all the time; people either love them or hate them. Some people use the term as an insult, while others refer to themselves as hipsters in a positive way. Why are they given so much attention today, instead of other culture/fashion trends? Seems to me like no other street trend is being talked about as much as hipsterism.

Here’s a short definition I found on the term Hipster (from Wikipedia):

“Hipsters (also scenesters) are a subculture of young, recently settled urban middle class adults and older teenagers with musical interests mainly in indie rock that appeared in the 1990s. Other interests in media would include independent film, magazines such as Vice and Clash, and websites like Pitchfork Media. “

The first thing that I saw about the culture was two years ago (if I remember correctly) and it was a website featuring photos pretty much ridiculing the culture. Here, of course, I am talking about Look at That Fucking Hipster. Not gonna lie, the stuff on there is pretty hilarious. However, the website hasn’t been active for over a year now.
