This post is a vent about taking note of what Mercury Retrograde might be doing to you and what you’re ALLOWING it to do to you and your business, as well as how a few tips from experts on how to survive Mercury Retrograde when it hits.
“Mercury Retrograde is the source of all my problems!”
“Oh, my computer/car/friendship/love is breaking… it must be Mercury Retrograde.”
“Mercury Retrograde is coming around… I might as well just stop and wait for it to pass. Too risky to do anything.”
These are some of the laments I’ve been reading in various online circles I’m a part of. Intriguing? Perhaps. But if you’re like, WTF is this girl talking about?!, don’t worry – I got you.
What is Mercury Retrograde? Now, I’m not an expert or anything but here’s what the Almanac says:
“When Mercury is Retrograde. Sometimes the other planets appear to be traveling backward through the zodiac; this is an illusion. We call this illusion retrograde motion. Three times a year, it appears as if Mercury is going backwards for about three weeks.” (Old Farmer’s Almanac)
So now you’re probably like, what does Mercury going backwards have to do with my LIFE?
Why does the way a planet orbits affect how I interact with others, with technology, and so on?
Gala Darling discusses that Mercury is known to be the planet of communication, clear thinking, truth, and travel, which is why when it goes backwards, these things may go backwards as well.

My experience with it
I haven’t heard of Mercury Retrograde until I started working with a health coach over a year ago.
There were some things going on in my life and she enlightened me that Mercury Retrograde might be the potential reason as to why I’d been been feeling “off.”
In typical Kamila fashion, I dove into research.
What is this?! How dare it mess with my life?!

I was shocked that I’d never heard of anything like this before. Before working with my coach, I haven’t really been exposed to the spiritual world, energy fields, chakras and more. Although I was aware of it, I never really dove into it and how it could be affecting everyday life.
Working with my health coach was one of the first ways I became more exposed to this “other world” and I am very grateful for her opening my eyes. I love learning, I’m intrigued by astrology, and I enjoy finding out how things work… gaining an understanding about something like Mercury Retrograde opened my mind up in a new way, which I appreciated.
Then, I came into contact with more self-proclaimed “woo-woo” people who opened my mind up even more. It was awesome. Interesting energy began floating around – a lot of love, mixed with curiosity, vulnerability, and a splash of inspiration.
There was something else going on there though…
Mercury Retrogade seemed to be happening, like, all the time?
My initial fascination with the occurrence soon shifted into confusion and frustration. While I agree that planet pulls may have some kind of an effect on us as well as the world we live in, but finding out that Mercury Retrograde happens THIS often (3 times per year for 3 weeks is 9 weeks out of the year… that’s a more than 2 full months put together!) it lost its appeal to me.
And something else became clear too.
I began noticing how much some people were using it as an EXCUSE to not do something. To not push forward. To hide and inhibit their desire to shine and succeed. They were using it as an excuse for things not going well. For not taking strides in growing their business. They were victims and prisoners to something that was so completely out of their control.
But it made me wonder… is it a self-fulfilling prophecy?
I saw a woman post on Facebook that she had all the Mercury Retrograde dates marked on her calendar so that she could be sure not to launch or do anything remotely related to business growth in those times.
I’m all for taking time off work but doing it because you are expecting things to go poorly because of an event that’s completely out of your control? And THIS often, at that? I just don’t get it.

It’s almost like when a man sneeringly asks a woman whether she’s acting like a bitch because it’s “that time of the month.” Or when men wouldn’t hire women for high power positions because women are perceived as more emotional and susceptible to “craziness” because of their hormones.
Now that’s just OFFENSIVE, right?
Because why should our performance or ability as female business owners be pre-determined by something like this?

Sure, I agree that hormones may affect our mindset or make us more emotional. I am also a big supporter of living in tune with our female body and not disregarding what it needs (like comfort, especially during those times of the month).
But if you get fired or didn’t get a client, because they said you’re going on your period so things are most likely gonna get nuts for you… you’d be LIVID!
Similarly, imagine this situation…
If I anticipated (and expected) that each time during “my lady time of the month,” I would get irrational, emotional, and become a bitch… That it’d be okay to eat candy and chocolate by the bucketfuls (it’s what I’m supposed to be doing)… That it’d be okay for me to get lazy and angry at the world, because I have an excuse…
Wouldn’t that make it nearly impossible for me to NOT do or feel those things?!
The truth is many of us are using it as an excuse rather than taking responsibility for your own actions. As if we have no control whatsoever (or ever) over our life and how we act.
Something is wrong with this picture.
Why are we making excuses? Why are people plotting in their calendars when they are “going to fuck up constantly”? Seriously? It doesn’t sound very woo-woo to me, it almost sounds like going against the concept of the Law of Attraction. Or rather, attracting the very thing they don’t want to happen: namely, fucking up constantly.
What you think will happen WILL happen because you’re allowing it to (and attracting it too!).
I realize this post might offend some people, particularly those who consider themselves more “woo-woo” and I apologize in advance. I love working with spiritual people and those who lean toward the “woo” side of things, and I try to play around with that type of thing in my personal life as well. But I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t serve you a big cup of “it’s time for a reality check.”
Mercury Retrograde: An important question to ask yourself: am I hiding behind it so I dont grow & shine? (click to tweet)
My concern is that we are using the concept of Mercury Retrograde as this terrible time where we can’t grow and be successful. I really find it ironic. Many people use this as their pseudo-excuse but yet they get offended when people use other things, also out of their control, as excuses. Isn’t that hypocritical?

My recommendation is to learn how to live and survive through Mercury Retrograde if it affects your life so profoundly but don’t let your business be put on hold because of something like this.
Having your business be on hold for 9 weeks out of a year is KIND of a long time, unless you’re like Oprah or something. ESPECIALLY when you are fully capable of continuing to make magic happen. What are you afraid of?
As a way to close this little venting post, I did a quick search for some resources in case you’ve been feeling offended as if I was calling you out. Cause if you were, then that means you’ve probably been using Mercury Retrograde in this way in your life as well. And that’s FINE. That’s okay! Who am I to judge you? I’m just saying – there are ways to keep growing your business without letting something like this dampen your progress.
So here are some great ideas I found that will help you around how to survive mercury retrograde:
How to survive Mercury Retrograde
Gala Darling says: “Allow Mercury to nudge you in unusual directions. If you seem to find yourself “back to the future”, don’t just try to wriggle out of it — look at what the universe is trying to show you. What can you learn from this situation? This is a fantastic time to re-examine, accept and move on.”
The Little Sage says: “Once the cycle begins, think of retrograde as putting the emphasis on “re” in your life and work. It’s time to rethink, reinvent, reconsider, reevaluate, reorganise, rework, revise, reform etc.”
Christina Ambubuyog says: “If you find that you are highly sensitive at this time, then honor your time. Don’t over schedule yourself with so many extra appointments outside of what is needed. MR is time when you get to connect in with your intuition and work on things that pertain to what you desire and dive into the shadow sides of the self that need to come to the light.”
Project Yourself says: “Communication errors are so common during this time. If an item of communication like an email is missed by someone, don’t assume that they are ignoring you. With spam filters, busy people answering a hundred emails a day and odd errors like emails simply not arriving, it’s better to give people the benefit of the doubt, especially during Mercury retrograde. Wait a day or two. If you haven’t heard from them, send a friendly reminder. Plus…try the phone. Things can get misconstrued in emails, so before letting that happen, pick up and dial or meet in person if possible. Like the saying goes, err on the side of being human and do it the old fashioned way.”
Amber Witch says: “Cleansing and reprogramming your spaces and yourself is always useful, even more when troublesome energies are directed towards you. Practice daily affirmations with positive connotations, smile a lot and flow with the situation.”
Organic Health says: “You might even hear from the most random exes and childhood classmates during retrogrades. Since Mercury retrograde brings the past back around, it’s a great time to reconnect with your roots. Get in touch with old friends – and don’t be surprised if people from your past track you down out of the blue, or you run into each other “randomly.”
Sophia Chang says: “Mercury Rx in general heightens intuition and urges us to examine our decisions carefully. This particular Rx gives us a boost in the independent thinking territory, making it an especially ideal time to release what we don’t need. Yes. We survive by giving No Fucks away.”
I hope you enjoyed this post around how to survive Mercury Retrograde and not let it dampen your business progress and hopefully it got you to think a little bit about what’s been going on. Keep on being awesome <3
