Are you struggling with reaching your goals? In this post, you will learn the SINGLE most important thing that will allow you to start reaching your goals faster.
Tell me if this resonates with you…
You come up with a new idea for your business and you are soo excited you can barely sleep. The euphoria of potentially hitting a gold mine has got you buzzing with creative energy way before you even figure out the details.
Who cares, it’s totally gonna work! This is IT – it’s the best idea ever and it’s obviously going to make you so filthy rich you’ll be sleeping on a bed made out of money and then you’ll live happily ever after.
But then… something shifts. You blink and actually notice the amount of work you have yet to do. That initial exhilarating feeling slowly begins to fade. That creative buzzing energy has been replaced with anxiety and overwhelm because you’ve finally realized how much you really have on your plate.
You hit a wall.
You begin doubting yourself….
“Is this really what I’m meant to be doing?” and “I’m not smart enough to pull this off, what was I even thinking?” are among the many thoughts that start entering your mind. But, like with many unwelcome yet persistent annoyances, you eventually begin to listen and actually agree with these negative thoughts, because heck, if you can’t beat them – you might as well join them, right?
The more you tell yourself these self-limiting stories, the more you begin to believe them – and before you know it, you’re way too stressed out to finish the project. The dreams of freedom and success become a distant memory as you sink into defeat and move on with what you were doing before the idea came about.
I totally know how you feel.
About two years ago, I had a great idea for a tech startup. I met up with my super-smart entrepreneur friend to gain some insight about tech businesses since he had started one of his own in the past. As we chatted over coffee (tea for me), I got clearer on my idea and began seeing the dream of success as it formed in my head.
I could work from home as much as I want… I’d make money when I sleep! I could travel all across America. But first, I’d move to Manhattan…. I would have an amazing apartment with an in-building gym and pool and…. Ahhh.
My friend was very supportive and gave me some great resources to help me learn how to code, get my stuff organized, and some advice about approaching angel investors. He was intrigued by my idea, saying it had good potential. Another cup of green tea later, I was beaming with enthusiasm (and caffeine)!
I knew my idea was great! I knew it. This is going to happen! It’s going to be life-changing.
I COULD FEEL IT!
And then… reality hit.
My excitement got trapped by an overflow of information and to-do’s.
“Holy crap, there’s so much to learn! How I could ever learn to code anyway, this stuff was so hard! And I still know nothing about tech startups… there’s so many fancy terms I have to keep track of, I feel like such an newb… Pathetic. How could I ever even this I could pull this off?!”
Self-doubt and limiting beliefs took place of the dreams of high-priced lattes and luxury condos overlooking the lake.
I had a lot on my plate as it was and I felt very alone. As a born independent and driven young woman, I felt too cautious of asking for help (afraid they’ll steal my idea and leave me hanging) and I couldn’t hire any help because I had no money.
My self-doubts felt me paralyzed and so distressed that my business idea ended up getting put away as “real life” got in the way. Running around in circles in my head left me so disoriented and frazzled that I stuffed the project away like it was some embarrassing “secret diary” from my youth.
Then I found out Google came out with a similar concept a few months later called ‘Google Helpouts.’
Womp womp. I knew I had a good idea there. Sigh.
So the question is….
Is it possible to thrive despite these challenges?
Thankfully it doesn’t have to be this way with every project or idea you come up with. I’ve learned on my mistakes and built myself up to become stronger than before.
- I’ve built a successful health & wellness blog that brings me a consistent income on a monthly basis.
- I went from idea to storyboard to finished product for several stop motion videos I’ve wanted to do for a very long time.
- I have an amazing coaching business that is completely passion-driven, where I’m able to work with other passion-driven solopreneurs like yourself align their passion with their message in the world so they can shine and reallyĹconnect with their potential customers.
So what changed?
What is the number one thing you can do to get yourself from desperately seeking motivation, inspiration, and willingness to follow through with your projects to actually getting things done and checking off that next thing off your list, knowing you are that much closer to your overall vision for your life and your business?
Accountability and support.
Okay, technically that’s two but both of those go hand in hand.
I’ve found that nothing gets things done easier like knowing that someone is keeping you accountable for your goals. Someone you can depend on to ask about your goal and keep you motivated and inspired with moving forward toward your vision. Someone that’s there to call you out on your excuses and get to the root of the problem when things keep coming up and getting in the way.
The right kind of accountability will propel you forward and get you moving faster than ever before.
How to use the power of accountability to reach goals faster:
1. Create a plan with S.M.A.R.T goals
I’m sure you know what S.M.A.R.T. goals are, but in case you don’t – S.M.A.R.T. goals are goals that are: specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely.
Take your bigger goals, break it down into smaller goals and create a plan of action. A big part of not reaching your goals is simply because you haven’t taken the time to write them down! Writing down your S.M.A.R.T. goals, backed up with a plan, is the first step to move forward.
“By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be. Put your future in good hands — your own.” – Mark Victor Hansen
This might be all you need to get yourself to the next level. And if it is – perfect! Look at you! Doing it big already!
However, if you’re like most of us – just having a plan and written goals is not quite enough. Things come up, self-doubt creeps in, and you start feeling tempted to leave the project behind.
That’s why the next level to achieving your goals is…
2. Announce your goals to others
We live in the world of social media and it’s now easier than ever to make your goals publicly known to others.
Make a Facebook post about it, tell your closest friends, and ask them to keep you accountable. However, make sure that your goals as S.M.A.R.T. rather than generic or “identity-based”.
For example, “I’m gonna become an entrepreneur” is a vague and “identity-based” goal. It’s “identity-based” because it talks about who you are and who you want to be, rather than a specific goal that you can achieve.
It’s been shown that announcing an “identity-based” goal publicly is not going to do much for you. But if you say “I’m going to finish my business plan by the end of the month” this is a smarter goal and announcing it and asking others to keep you accountable is much more likely to get you to actually act and achieve these goals.
Scott Belsky, the author of “Making Ideas Happen” said: “Your accountability to your own ideas is greatly amplified when you “go public” on any project – and even more so when you publicly proclaim your goals.”
The problem with announcing it publicly is that usually our friends aren’t enough to keep us accountable. Even if you find a friend or two that promise to keep you accountable and support you, many times they might not hold up their end of the bargain regardless. There are many reasons why this might happen, but that’s another topic for another blog post.
And it’s not always the case, but unfortunately – it’s more common than we hope to think.
But not all is lost because to really stay on the path of reaching your goals is this next option….
3. Hire a coach that understands your needs
Hiring someone to keep you accountable and provide you with the exact type of support you need in reaching your goals is crucial to succeeding in your business.
I know you might sometimes feel resistant to the idea. You know you can handle it on your own and I don’t doubt it. But there’s really nothing better that will help you get your sh*t together more than having someone work with you and truly keep you accountable for the goals you set.
That is not to say that the goals you create with a coach are set in stone. That’s a recipe for disaster (and self-doubt, disappointment, and a bunch of other yucky feelings) – that’s why when you work with someone you really click with, you can feel not only motivated to get your to-do’s checked off the list but also supported. Knowing that someone has your back, no matter what might come up, is a truly amazing feeling.
I didn’t know how much I was missing before I actually started working with a coach. It’s like my entire world shifted. It’s good knowing that you can have someone to count on to be there for you without any hidden agendas and assumptions.
Find a coach that you click with and, I promise you, your mentality and approach to moving forward and reaching your goals will shift forever.
